About SMAT

SMAT produces more than 250 million m3 of drinking water/year distributed through a network extending about 7000 km and service a user base topping 2 million residents. SMAT collects the urban wastewater through 6000 km of sewage networks to take it to 160 small, medium and large waste water plants that treat more than 270 million m3 of water. The Castiglione Torinese plant is the largest chemical-physical-biological treatment plant in Italy and represents a technological reference for to the high standards achieved.

SMAT’s requirements

The SMAT remote control system has been optimally designed and maintained with not recent SCADA platforms. The manager’s need was to migrate to an open platform that would meet total reliability criteria, but would in any case guarantee personnel the possibility to work on their own in the quantitative (new RTUs) and functional developments. The goal was to integrate RTUs coming from different former managers of different technologies in order to supply a complete and open tool, but one built in a continuous porting process without ever hindering or stopping everyday management. The strong difference of the size of the plants has made critical the choice of a SCADA that would have been able to adapt to all the different needs.

Our solution

Advice and personalization. We have identified the best platform for reliability and flexibility, which subsequently, thanks to our specialized system integrator skills, has been modified and customized, satisfying the need to minimize operational changes to the staff.

Partnership over the years. The platform has been expanded in order to integrate all present devices in the new territories acquired by SMAT.

Reliability. Due to the architecture distributed throughout the territory the SCADA has allowed a continuity of total service even during software updates.

Flexibility. The platform has met all the needs, and it has become fundamental in managing the process to which the various existing RTUs, new devices (e.g. IoT low power meters) and specific executions (e.g. controllers for the Water Houses) are connected.

SMAT today

Today SMAT works with almost 1,000 controlled RTUs of different types with multiple transmission carriers and protocols.
In addition to remote control, the automation of the waste water plants, including Castiglione Torinese (almost 3 million population equivalent), is managed by networks of PLCs of different manufacturers. Complete reliability of the system is ensured by a Disaster Recovery configuration that, thanks to the potentials of OnLine Configuration of the SCADA package, offers management continuity even during updates and expansions. The technical staff of SMAT, due to our training, has reached a complete autonomy both in the normal SCADA operations and in developing complex software integrations. The SCADA has been a fundamental element of several important projects completely developed in-house, such as monitoring and control of the network water distribution points (IoTiBevo), organization on District Metering Area (DMA) of the water network and forecast consumption model of the city of Turin.
